One&Only Reethi Rah strike cracked down by Government of Maldives

source: maverick

In a carefully orchestrated plan to stifle dissent and silence the growing voices of the tourism workers in the Maldives, the government cracked down on the leaders of Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) on Sunday. In a predawn raid at One&Only Reethi Rah resort in Male’ Atoll, where a strike was going on since Friday, members of STAR Team from Special Operations Division of Maldives Police Service used excessive force while arresting 13 strikers.

Among those arrested is Ahmed Easa, the President of TEAM. Ahmed Mihad, Vice President of TEAM, told Jazeera Daily that Easa is injured from the police assault. Mihad alleges police used pepper spray and excessive force during the raid. He said several workers were hurt including female employees. “It looks like the police are unaware of the change in government,” Mihad told Jazeera Daily.

Statements from the police contradict these allegations. The state-owned Television Maldives reported, referring to police sources, that excessive force was not used. Rumours that the strikers were damaging property at the resort are also being spread. However, Mihad said the strikers were peaceful during the strike.

More than 200 workers from One&Only Reethi Rah started the strike on Friday morning calling for improvements in working conditions. Minivan News reported that 13 of them were fired by Saturday evening, including the head of TEAM, Easa. Mauroof Zakir, a Vice President of TEAM, who also worked at the same resort, was among the 13 workers who were sacked.

“We have been working on these islands like slaves but the reason that our rights aren’t implemented is because parliament is run by rich businessmen,” Easa told Minivan News on Saturday. “The former government and this government so far have both failed to protect our rights,” he added.

The 13 employees who were fired refused to leave the island saying that under the new labour law they cannot be fired without two weeks notice and an explanation for terminating employment. Zakir told Minivan News he will stay on the island till he receives a court order and added that he believed he was fired because of his campaigns for workers’ rights.

It appears that the resort management asked the police to move in and physically remove the 13 strikers who were fired.

Even though there is no adequate legal framework for workers’ unions, TEAM has been functioning as a de facto union and has been at the forefront of demanding rights for workers in the tourism sector. When the Employment Act was ratified in May it exempted the tourism employees from receiving basic rights under it, prompting TEAM to start a long campaign to include the tourism workers in the Employment Act. They were successful in the campaign but TEAM still complains several resorts are not enforcing the Employment Act. Recent strikes in some tourist resorts resulted in the dismissal of striking employees despite the constitution that was ratified in August guaranteeing the right to strike.

Critics have accused the new government sworn in on November 11, as being too cozy with business interests. The government is a coalition made up of several political factions which are either formed by business tycoons or backed by tycoons. The home minister Gasim Ibrahim is one of the wealthiest businessmen in the country and the owner of Villa Resorts. He was the presidential candidate from the Republican Party in the first round of the recent election. Ahmed Sawad, the tourism minister, also from Republican Party and the running mate of Gasim during the presidential election, is believed to be a proxy of Gasim and other resort owners. The police are also accountable to the home minister. Haveeru reports that the police raided One&Only Reethi Rah following the instructions of home minister Gasim Ibrahim.

Sunday’s incident at One&Only Reethi Rah confirms that the brutal tactics of the STAR Team have not changed despite a change of government. The STAR Team was known for their brutal control of anti-government protests when the former dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was in power. Adam Zahir, the notorious police commissioner under Gayoom, was retired by the new government recently. However, top brass in the police force, who have been accused of corruption and torture, remains in control, and the current police commissioner Ahmed Faseeh is no exception.

Dissidents in Maldives are already fearful of the direction the new government has taken. Last week the government submitted a Bill to the Parliament proposing to extend the lease period of tourist resorts to 50 years in a move that will benefit the wealthy tourism tycoons. It is expected that the bill will pass easily in the parliament which is dominated by the tycoons.

Reethi Rah resort is owned by the family of Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, the former atolls minister, parliament member for Baa Atoll, and deputy leader of Dhivehi Raiyithunge Party (DRP). He was the running mate of ex-president Gayoom in the October election. The resort is managed by the international resort and casino operator Kerzner International under its luxury brand One&Only Resorts. Conde Nast Traveller magazine’s UK readers voted the resort as number one in the world in 2007. Despite close connections between the resort management and the regime of ex-president Gayoom, the resort employees were always proactive in voicing dissent. The employees had established a cell of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the resort and were active in campaigning for MDP in the October election. It is no surprise that several leaders of employees’ association TEAM worked at the same resort. TEAM endorsed presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed of MDP in the election.

By unleashing the brutal STAR Team on the resort, the government of Nasheed has stabbed once loyal supporters in the back. The government has also given a strong signal that the corporate interests of the tycoons are far important than upholding workers’ rights in the tourism industry of Maldives.

Thirteen Fired After 200 Strike At Five Star Resort

source: minivannews.com

Five-star luxury resort One and Only Reethi Rah has fired thirteen of its staff following a mass strike over working conditions that began Friday morning, according to employees.

The dismissed staff includes Ahmed Easa, President of Tourism Employees Association Maldives, a new body that has been at the forefront of pushing for the implementation of labour rights for resort workers.

More than 200 employees began the strike on Friday, erecting and filling a marquee at 6.00am in what they have described as a peaceful protest.

By this evening, thirteen of them were fired, with staff saying they were no longer needed. read more

Readers' Letters

Dear Editor(s),

I joined MDP and have been with the party since very long. I voted for Mr Nasheed in the last election. I had wished for real changes and a better government than the former ruler. However, some of my fears are coming back to me now. Hence, I take this opportunity to share them with you.

1. It is true Mr Nasheed does not have family members in the cabinet, but he does have selfish greedy politicians and has assigned posts to people with conflict of interests. His colleagues gagged at the former ruler Mr. Maumoon when people with no appropriate qualifications were appointed to ministerial posts, but today we see a dentist making policies for farmers and fishermen!

2. Over the past few weeks I see Mr Nasheed offering high positions in the governments as "political gifts" to his loyals, people from his campaign office, and party activists without considering their capability or efficacy.

3. Mr Maumoon had violated our constitution again and again during his tenure as the president. Not just that. He had unjustly punished lots of people for mere political reasons. As of today, he has not taken any responsibilities for them or sought forgiveness from these people. (Those words he said during his last address to the nation was nothing more than a formality lacking any sense of remorse. He never admitted to his deliberate crimes against the humanity.) Yet, Mr Nasheed is quick to offer all the incentives and benefits he asked for without any mandate from the parliament.

I would greatly appreciate if you could publish this email on your blog, which I find very professional and useful at a time like this when the media is very much silent. I must say yours is an eye-opener for relevant issues affecting the larger population.

Yours sincerely,
Naeem

Why this blog?

To contribute towards checks and balances in the new government following the vast vacuum created by the change of administration. We need criticism and different views to flourish our young democracy. Hence, this blog was launched on 12th November 2008.

Why did you choose "oppose anni"?

We have nothing against Anni or anyone else. We always think he can do a better job. We just chose a weird name for promotional purpose and hope to move onto something later on.

Who are you?

We are Maldivians from the online community and we feel we have a duty towards making our nation a better place for everyone. We encourage our writers to use their names at a later stage if not in the beginning.

Can I contribute articles?

Yes, we welcome anyone irrespective of their political belief. This is meant to be an open blog comprising different authors. Submit your interest to opposeanni@gmail.com so we can issue you a username and password.

What are your policies?

No filthy language. No unfound accusations. Rumours must be stated as such. No personal grudges. We highly encourage our readers to request any article seems offensive to be removed.

Is our anni in maumoon's shoes?

Yesterday I read in the media that 14 State Ministers have been appointed and even there are 3 such guys for one ministry. As I'm already aware that this figure is far lower compared to state ministers under the former president Maumoon, I still wish to ask the readers if we really need all these State Ministers and what for. Have they been chosen based on their proven performance or another political appointments?

It is a well known fact that almost all the appointment of state ministers under Maumoon's administration was more like giving a fat salary to his cronies. Is this what anni is upto? Is he rewarding out of the public coffer to those who have been loyal to MDP/himself and worked hard during his campaign. Is our anni wearing maumoon's shoes? I hope not. Yet, it is difficult for me to shake off these thoughts when I see some faces and keep wondering if they could ever deliver given their past experiences.

I must also admit that some of the appointees are very capable, proven administrators and would make good deputy ministers. Then why big titles like 'State Ministers' when we want our ministers to lead a simple Maldivian life and understand us better? Most importantly, when we want them to realize they are actually servants of the people. Anni, may I remind you that the national treasury belongs to over 300,000 people and you must NOT use it to please your cronies like the former ruler did. It is an 'amanah' given to you by the people and should NOT use it except in a way it would benefit that over 300,000 people.

Talks about prisoners

We have been reading in the media that the newly elected President is talking about current prisoners in the jail. What is all this do with? Does he genuinely believe there are lots of people put behind the bars for the wrong reasons? Or is he indirectly referring to people like Fahala Saeed, the journalist of Minivan Daily?

We are aware that he got lots of votes during the last election from these prisoners, when voting by prisoners is such a controversial issue. If these people behind the bars can play computers in the cells, go fishing in the sea, enjoy barbecue on the open beach and finally vote during all the elections, how are they different from a free man?

Although we do not reject the whole idea, we must be aware that the crime rate in the country is increasing and the severity of these crimes is also increasing. These must be dealt with appropriately to save the larger population. Everyone is saying Male' is no safe because of gang violence and drug-related crimes. While the president is talking about giving concessions to current jailers, does he also think about these issues going out of hand?

The Cabinet smells politics!

We have hoped for a star cabinet with capable administrators. But we see today are slow beaucrats like Dr Aminth Jameel and Dr Musthafa; and political appointees with lots of conflict of interest. Mr Buruma Gasim, Mr Sawad, Dr Didi, Dr Jameel are there for nothing but political reasons. Will they and others resign on their when they could not deliver or blame someone else as Mr Buruma Gasim did recently at the last minute after duping the parliament over overly deficient budget?

Mr President, you don't have to do this. They did not vote you but for themselves. Perhaps they campaigned for you for this in return. However we voted you into office for real change. We wanted a leadership change. We wanted to get a better life -- a better Maldives. We wanted basic needs at affordable rates. We know Maldives has the highest GDP in the region but only a few enjoys the benefits of it.

Mr President, do promise us that you will sack those who cannot show results in 100 days in the jobs, if they did not resign on their own. We have voted you because you wanted to see results and that you deliver your promises, not another political ordeal. We have had enough of political ordeals and deception in the name of reform in the past 30 years.

Welcome to the Other Maldives!

May we first convey our warmest facilitations to the first democratic president of the Maldives, Mr. Nasheed? We are pleased to see a new administration in place, even after 30 years! This has been only possible because of the courage and determination of people like you.

Everyone of us had worked hard for this day. This has been our dream. But we do not want the past to reoccur as it did for Mr. Maumoon. Our forefathers welcomed him wholeheartedly and rejoiced when he took the oath of the presidency only to realise it was a big mistake after several years. Because of the greed for the power and comfortable life as a president Mr. Maumoon could not follow the footsteps of the former ruler, Mr Nasir. We all know Mr. Nasir completed 2 terms of office as the president and let the people choose another leadership even when he could have stayed over.

At this point we must also realise Mr. Maumoon has been spoiled because of the people around him. They praised him too much; he believed he never made a mistake and was nearly infallible. Mr President Nasheed, do understand we will only praise you when we have to and only to promote just and right.
